Volunteer Flyer

Why volunteer?   Each person may have a different reason: some want to learn new skills, some want to experience working with animals, some simply enjoy the opportunity to spend time with new people and new pets. What all of our volunteers have in common is a love for animals and a desire to help them – and we couldn’t do what we do without their help. We are 100% volunteer run.
There is an age requirement to volunteer at Scott County Humane Society: volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
If you are under 16 years old look below for an enrichment activity to give to our animals.

Volunteers must commit to an average of 4 hours a month for 4 months.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our volunteer opportunities are many and varied, from hands-on activities like cleaning and socializing, to behind-the-scenes activities like pet photography and event decorating. Many of our events require volunteers in a variety of roles. Once you apply to be a volunteer, you’ll be part of an animal rescue organization with proven results. We need you! f you have an idea about how to volunteer that isn’t on the list, we will be happy to hear it!

Foster Care

Care for cats/kittens or dogs/puppies in your home who are not ready for adoption due to age or health. Foster homes are needed for both short term (2-4 weeks) or long term placements (1-2 months or longer) while the animals are waiting to be adopted into a permanent home. SCHS provides all necessary supplies including food, leash/collar, litter, preventives, etc.. All you need to do is provide a temporary home and love. This position helps save more lives. Once you sign up to foster you will receive additional information from the cat and dog program coordinators.  You will receive plenty of support while you foster.

Fundraising Events

Provide assistance with special fundraising events. Our signature annual events are listed on our website. We also have other smaller events and promotions that require volunteer assistance.

Handyman Skills

Adoption Events

Assist the adoption counselor at adoption events. Pet adoption counselors and assistants are responsible for facilitating the adoption of cats and dogs and possibly other animals during adoption events. The assistant will also help protect the animals and people during the visit and alert the counselor to any problems. This position is crucial to helping us adopt more animals. When there are no visits to be conducted, volunteers may socialize the animals.

Adoption events are mostly on Saturdays but can be any day of the week.

Computer/IT Skills

Using your abilities and knowledge which allow you to use computers and related technology. You may be asked to do data entry, create word documents, spreadsheets or powerpoint presentations.

Fundraising/Development (Requires Special Training)

Will work with the Development committee doing outreach to donors with the goal to develop long-term financial resources for Scott County Humane Society.

We need your help every week taking photos of adoptable pets to place on our rescuegroups website. The more you help us “get the word out,” the more animals we can save! You may have the opportunity to also take pictures for our fundraising events. The social media volunteer has the wonderful opportunity of growing our social media presence to reach and engage more animal lovers in our life saving mission.
