Scott County Humane Society is able to do all it does each day for animals in need because of dedicated and passionate pet lovers like you! There are lots of ways you can volunteer and even helping as little as a couple of hours a month is of great benefit to the animals in our care. Please read our Volunteer Policies and Procedures. You can submit an online volunteer application or visit our adoption center to complete a volunteer application or print off our volunteer application fill it out and submit it to SCHSCenter@yahoo.com or drop it off at our office. Please note that if you submit a paper application, you will need to submit a signed Volunteer Agreement and Liability Release before you do any volunteer work.
Once your application is received, you will be promptly contacted to discuss various opportunities.
Do you have space in your house and heart to be a foster home? This is a demanding yet rewarding position. Foster homes are needed for both short term (2 to 4 weeks) and long term placements (1-2 months or longer), while cats, kittens, dogs and puppies wait to be adopted to their permanent home. Foster homes must be able to commit to having their animal available to be brought to the SCHS adoption center for adoption events.
Volunteers are needed on Saturdays to take the cats, kittens, dogs and puppies in foster care to different satellite adoption locations in Lexington and Georgetown where people meet our pets. Adoption counselors are trained to educate and answer questions about the pets and the SCHS adoption program. You can help as a pet transporter, a counselor or be an assistant, or work behind the scenes with online adoptions! Even transporting cats to or from Petsmart in Lexington once a month is helpful and only takes about one and a half hours.
Enjoy party planning? Then sign up to help organize or assist with one of our many fundraisers. It takes a lot hands and minds to keep our fundraisers fun and fresh for the public. Our fundraisers are a major part of our budget and your help would be greatly appreciated. Check out our Events pages to learn more about our different fundraisers.
Clean, Maintain and Support our Adoption Center
In order to make sure the animals at our adoption center stay healthy, the center must be cleaned and sanitized every day especially the cat room and cages. We need help with general cleaning, cleaning litter boxes and cages and doing laundry. We also need help with general maintenance and "handyman" work such replacing lights, plumbing repairs, moving or hanging things. We need volunteers to help decorate our adoption center for events like Santa Paws. We also need customer service volunteers to meet and assist the public when they visit our adoption center. You could bag food and cat litter for our P.E.T (Pets Eat Too) Food Bank which supports financially challenged pet owners in the community who lack funds to feed their pets from time to time.
Help with Education and Public Outreach
We need people who can speak to kids and the public about how to properly care for animals so they don't end up in a shelter. You could help with our Kind Kids Education Outreach by scheduling K-12 Pet Education classes at local schools. We need volunteers to take companion cats and dogs to local nursing homes for a visit and to Georgetown College for our Stressless with Pets event to provide students a relaxing, stress reducing time during finals week. SCHS volunteers bring foster cats and dogs to Georgetown College so students can unwind with the enjoyable purrs, woofs and cuddles which fill the recreation room.
Use Your Computer & Technology Skills
You can volunteer to help the Scott County Humane Society even if you don't live in Scott County. We need help with web site design and maintenance, data entry and the preparation of grant applications.
