Emmy is an approximately one year old hound mix. She was surrendered by a displaced person to the fire department (Station 3) in late November because he didn’t want her out in the cold with him. She is an affable, intelligent, alert, and fun-loving dog who does very well with friendly dogs and cats. She likes all humans, including the littles. Due to her age, she still gets excited during play time, she wouldn’t be suitable for unsupervised children under age seven or eight. However, if you’re around to supervise, she’s great with a four- or five-year-old

She loves to be where her people and foster pet family are, so if you work from home and have an extra spot under your desk, she makes an excellent office mate. She loves to sunbathe in the yard on a warm day as well.

Her energy level is moderate. Outside, she loves to chase her foster brothers, play with her toys, explore the tree/fence line, and get in a good zooming run here and there. After about ten minutes, she’s finished and ready for her bed and a chew toy or bone.

On a leash, she is calm and confident, happy to walk at your pace, wait at gates, and keep going when meeting another dog while out. Inside, she prefers her bed, a chew, and naps.

Since having Emmy in foster care, I have not seen any resource guarding of any kind, whether it’s food, toys, or a particular person/animal friend.

She is the coolest/sweetest/easiest to train medium-sized hound mix a person or family could want. She is confident, calm, and eager to please. The only fear response I’ve seen in her is when she first saw the Chuck It I use to throw balls to my dogs. After some throws from farther away from her (letting her watch), she didn’t shy at it again. Maybe in her former life someone threw things at her ☹.

Emmy is receiving professional training once a week, which I reinforce throughout the rest of the week. The trainer says, “She’s a top-of-the-class dog! Super fantastic fast-learning little hound dog!”  She’d be fun for 4-H dog shows with continued training.

Things Emmy Knows:

Pottying occurs outside

Sit, Paw, Catch (a treat), Come, Heel, Place, and Watch

Harnessing and leashing up – she’s a pro

Crate-trained

Treats are awesome when she’s learning new skills, such as Fetch (she had no clue what that game was, but she’s quickly gotten the hang of it)

Gently takes treats or toys when they’re offered

Cats are not squirrels, not to be chased

If a dog warns her off, she’ll go play with the other dog or by herself

Barking is to alert her humans someone she cannot see is close or on the property. She’ll desist once her person tells her it’s okay.
