Lola is an approximately six to seven months old thirty-pound Border Collie/Heeler mix with lots of puppy energy and enthusiasm. Usually, she doesn't meet a stranger she doesn’t instantly greet, and seems to expect all humans, dogs, cats, and squirrels to welcome her as their new best friend. However, sometimes, around small children, she is hesitant as if she hasn't seen a mini person previously. However, she warms right up and the tail starts wagging. Older dogs may need to socialize or correct her spasms of joy, but she figures out quickly to lie down on her own bed and not bother her older foster brothers during television time. Presently, her best friend is our young, confident cat; they enjoy staring into each other’s eyes or playing with Jupie’s cat toys together. Our other cat is not a fan, but Lola just ignores her while Khaleesi sits, stares, and hisses at her.
Lola’s Day to Day Info: Crating – Understands, "Kennel Up," and is generally quiet once inside. She doesn't bark, but she will whine for a few moments occasionally. Once her spay rest ends, I'll transition her to an out of crate bedtime routine. Car rides – she’s figuring out that it’s okay to go into confined spaces, especially if her human or cat is joining her. Once the car starts, she is a total little lady – sits or lies still – no crawling across the seats, rushing from window to window, or whimpering. Basic obedience – I’ve trained her on a long leash and her recall for Come is pretty perfect even with distractors around her. Sit and down are at about 70%. Stay is just started, but she shows excellent promise. She’s smart and responsive and not always driven by treats. She likes treats fine inside; however, outside, she prefers positive affirmations and ear scratches for motivation. Also, happily accepts a good belly rub as payment for a job well-done. Leash-training – presently, she goes everywhere with me on either a regular or long leash and she isn’t much of a puller. Now that she is spayed, we’ll begin working on heel and halt. Likes walks and exploring but won’t be allowed taking public walks until after her next puppy shot is given (Nov. 5th or 12th). I fully expect her to be someone’s off-leash working or family farm dog once she’s had practice. Potty-training – She now understands “Go Potty” when we hit the grass and will give a bit of a caterwaul inside when she needs to go outside. Toys: Lola loves toys and balls. She is getting the hang of fetch, but after about five rounds, she wanders off to find a stuffie or a chew. If you bounce a ball on the ground, she will jump into the air to catch it. She isn’t fully coordinated for the four-five jump she possesses, but one day she may shine as an agility dog for some perfect partner. Other manners – I work from home and eat my lunch in my office where Lola hangs out with me. She will sniff the air when I bring in my food, but all I have to say is, “Nope,” and she goes and lies down. At the dinner table, she lies quietly on her long leash while my husband and I eat. Jumping - Only jumps on those who allow it but never overly spastic about it. More of a little greeting. If you tell her “Nope" or "Lola, Sit," she won’t jump. She’ll sit and stare into your eyes and mesmerize you into kneeling down to give her a hug. Summary – Lola is a great puppy on the way to being an amazing family dog. Anyone with basic dog handling experience and an understanding of the energy level she has would adore her. She will be with you through thick or thin times, forever checking in on you!
Requirements to Apply to Adopt: Lola will not be suitable for apartment living or a home without a fenced yard unless you are a very active person who will dedicate the hours of exercise, physical and mental, her breed requires. She needs to be busy working or going wherever you go. A daily walk will not be enough without other outlets for her to run and jump or scent things. Though she is kennel trained and seems to know the furniture isn't to be chewed upon, she's still a puppy. Leaving her in the kennel or home alone for long stretches of time may result in anxiety and misbehavior.
